Updated: Oct 4, 2018

What's it about?

Set in 18th century England, it follows the story of Georgiana - as she marries the duke of Devonshire for high wealth and station, yet fails to give him a male heir. She befriends lady Bess and gets involved with her first love, young politician Charles Gray, - which threatens to leave her reputation in ruin and herself - separated from her children.

Why watch it?

If you're a fan of Keira Knightley in a corset; for breathtaking soundtracks; to see British aristocracy; if you know what to look for because you know the historical figures it is based on.

Critics Reception

'Stately, measured pageant-drama', as The Guardian film critic calls it, The Duchess takes credit for its stunning landscapes, fashion and overall glamourous mise en scene. However, the main criticism is that the film doesn't do justice to the real duchess of Devonshire, whose story it is based on, - with her actual political involvement and charm.

Historical background

The film is based on Amanda Foreman's book Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire and the biography of Georgiana Cavendish(1757-1806), duchess of Devonshire - the great-great-great-grand-aunt of Diana, princess of Wales.
