Upcoming: what The Aftermath (2019) trailer reveals about the story

Now... We're waiting for two period drama films starring Keira Knightley - Colette and The Aftermath. I only watched The Aftermath trailer properly today, and it doesn't stir anything inside me so far.

The problem with most trailers nowadays is that they pretty much follow the story and already give out the interesting parts in the trailer. I mean, I literally just watched a shortened version of the romance between Rachael Morgan and Stefan Lubert - without even having to watch the film. Long before (meaning 1 minute in) the kissing and sex occur on screen, we already know where it's going.

The audience, growing up watching films and constantly in touch with social media and thousands of stories told through images, is clever. That's what my film teacher pointed out - without even knowing it, more often than not we feel when something's wrong with the way something is shot, or when the actor is faking it. Similarly, we recognise 'Chekhov's gun' at once - one lingering gaze is enough to imply that the real reason we should want to see The Aftermath is the love triangle.

Hopefully the romance is just a hook, and the film will be a clever character study, focussing on the trauma that follows WWII. Hopefully the love triangle won't be all there is, as the trailer suggests so far, with post WWII setting serving as mere background for another Keira Knightley love triangle stories in costume.
